Top rainy day activities for kids

With April approaching and the school holidays around the corner, we know that the weather can be unpredictable. Sometimes it’s glorious and other times it can be miserable.

On rainy days, children can’t enjoy the outdoors and they become cooped up inside. It is very easy for them to waste their day watching TV or scrolling on the internet. Reducing their screen time can be difficult and rainy day activities can feel boring as well as repetitive. To help you with ideas, we have picked out our top rainy day activities for kids. Take a look and try these fun activities out to prevent boredom.

Get baking

One of the best indoor activities for kids, to keep them busy on rainy days, is baking yummy treats. Baking is super fun for kids as it’s very hands on and rewarding. Of course the best part is eating the tasty treats afterwards!

There’s lots to bake from scrumptious cookies and yummy cakes to pizzas. Children can learn about measurements to make a recipe work whilst they bake. Plus, baking with kids is a great way to have some quality, and slightly messy, bonding time.

Host a comedy show

Kids love to tell jokes, so why not chase the rainy day blues away with a comedy show? Rustle up some popcorn and grab your favourite soft drinks for some entertainment. Encourage children to think of their best jokes and perform them. You could even join in and see who makes the most people laugh.

Invite family members round to join in the fun and use a microphone to make it feel like real stand-up comedy session. Also, with more people a microphone ensures kids can be heard!

Make a fort

Rainy day activities can be very simple to keep the kids entertained. Task children with making a fort. Let them search for soft furnishings such as pillows, cushions and blankets around the house. They can then construct this however they like using the couch as something to prop the fort against.

Once the kids have figured out the best way to make the fort, they can go wild with decorating inside to make it extra cosy. Large teddies, blankets, duvets and pillows are all great options to snuggle with inside the fort. You could even suggest hanging fairy lights to make the fort magical. Once done, you could have a cosy evening watching films and eating your favourite snacks!

Have an indoor picnic/tea party

When the weather is miserable, a great pick-me-up is having a delicious indoor picnic or tea party. Prepare some yummy treats with your kids such as home-made biscuits, sandwiches, cakes, scones, savoury rolls, and fruit. Lay down a blanket or small table and enjoy your picnic bites together. You could even convert this into a tea party by using a tea party set and inviting the kids dolls and teddies to join you.

Go treasure hunting

Release children’s inner pirates by taking them on a treasure hunt in your house. One of the most enjoyable rainy day activities for kids as they search for clues and find treasure. Step up the fun by offering prizes at the end of the hunt.

For older children, make written clues that leads them onto the next treasure. If your children are younger, use the hotter and colder method as they approach certain areas in the room.

Want to make it even more difficult? You could make the hunt a mini treasure hunt. Hide away tiny everyday objects that are hard to find straight away. These could be grains of rice, Lego, staples, marbles and buttons. Challenge your kids to find as many mini objects as they can and the winner gets a prize.

Take up yoga

Keeping kids active is essential for a balanced healthy lifestyle. However, when the weather is dreary it can be hard to enjoy physical exercise. Why not practise yoga as a family for the miserable weather days? Not only does yoga get parents and kids moving, but it’s an excellent way to bond.

Start off simple with the basic yoga stances such as tree pose and downward dog. Once you have more confidence with the basics, you can all try out more difficult yoga poses. Continue practising yoga as often as possible and save this fun activity for rainy days.

To help you, follow various YouTube videos such as 10 minute kids yoga, Encato kids yoga and Bluey yoga.

Read and write stories

A perfect way to spend damp, dark days is to read and write stories. Gather a collection of your kids favourite books and spend some quality time, curled up under a blanket, reading. You could read together or have some independent reading time.

Once you have finished reading, task your kids with writing their own version of the story or make up an entirely new story! They could think about alternative endings or what would happen if a character did something different. Let their imaginations run wild and encourage them to read out their story to the family.

Play some fun board games

Provide endless hours of fun by getting out some classic board games and puzzles. Challenge kids to a few games and see who wins. Board games and puzzles are a great way to spend time indoors when the weather is horrible. Kids can enjoy some family time and get competitive. Plus, there’s so many to choose from such as Monopoly, Jenga and Top Trumps.
