Easter activities: How to celebrate Easter weekend as a family

Easter is just around the corner, occurring earlier this year on the 31st of March. The holiday is a time for seeing family and friends, enjoying various activities and, of course, eating yummy chocolate eggs! However, it can be difficult to think of new and exciting ways to celebrate Easter weekend. To help you, we have created some super fun Easter activities to do together as a family.

Cook a family Easter lunch

A perfect way to celebrate Easter weekend is by cooking an Easter lunch for family and friends. Get your kids involved with helping to prepare and cook by using simple recipes. There’s plenty of yummy Easter treats to make, such as the classic chocolate cornflake or rice cakes. Chocolate cornflake or rice cakes are super easy to make so that kids can do this independently with only a little help! Follow this recipe for cornflake cakes and serve at your lunch as a little treat for everyone! Switch the cornflakes for Rice Krispies if you prefer.

For the main course you could make slow cooked lamb or beef wellington. It is also ideal to check your guests dietary needs to cater for anyone with intolerances, vegetarians and vegans. You could prepare a simple cheese, leek and potato pie or a mushroom wellington as alternatives so everyone can enjoy a homecooked lunch.

Kids love to bake so get some extra hands to help create a spread of delicious desserts. From traybakes to cupcakes, find easy baking recipes that children can get messy with here.

Have a family outdoor fun day

Easter activities don’t have to be limited to the indoors. The weather can start improving as Spring is approaching, which means that you could possibly have some outdoor fun. You could organise a family outdoor fun day and invite your friends, neighbours and other family members to play some Easter themed games and take part in Easter activities. Doing this is perfect for the kids as they can get active, socialise and get excited about celebrating Easter.

Depending on the space of your back garden, you could create various game and activity spaces such as an obstacle course, a bouncy castle, face painting, Easter egg hunt trail and a sports area. You could encourage your friends and neighbours to assist with the day by chipping in to help out and run the activities. You could also ask everyone attending to bring items of food and drink so that you can offer a buffet to everyone.

Incorporate traditional games into the day to keep the cost low. You could put on an egg and spoon race which can be done individually or as a relay. Purchase small rewards, such as crème eggs, for the winners and go head to head with families. You could also play bean bag toss by creating your own bunny out of cardboard. Cut a hole in the bunny’s mouth or stomach for people to toss the bean bags in to. Again, offer small prizes for anyone who gets the most in or just for trying!

Take a trip to the zoo

Have some family fun by taking a trip to the zoo. Kids love to feel up close and personal to animals. The zoo is the perfect place to see various animals and feel close to them in their enclosures. Plus, many zoos offer engaging activities during the holidays that children can get stuck into.

At Chester zoo, you can arrange for your children to participate in the rangers holiday club that is available over the Easter holidays. During the time kids spend at the club they can explore the zoo before it opens and discuss themes based on the chosen topic for the day. They can participate in team building games before doing crafts that relate to the topic. There’s a club for juniors and for younger children. Woburn safari park also offer a similar experience for older kids over Easter. Find out more here.

During the Easter break, Chester zoo are also holding a really wild egg trail throughout the zoo. Kids can collect their maps and try to spot the six hidden animal eggs. However, they are not the animals you would expect! Children can learn more about the amazing animals and how their lives start while seeing them up close.

Host an Easter themed party

The best way to celebrate Easter is by hosting a party for friends and family to attend. Offer guests fun Easter games, activities, tasty treats, dancing and even karaoke. Choose popular and upbeat songs to play that kids and adults can boogie to and have a sing-off battle to keep everyone entertained.

You could also play charades but twisting the game to act out Easter phrases. Cut out egg shapes from pieces of paper and write phrases to act out such as egg hunt, bunny, food and chick. Another game you could play is bingo. There are plenty of free Easter bingo cards that you can print off and use. Instead of dabbers you could use little chocolate bunnies to mark the cards with. Also, you could play musical statues but everyone has to hop like bunnies to the music. You could make some cute bunny ears for everyone to wear.

As a gesture of kindness to your friends and family you could gift them Easter hampers when they leave the party. Create a hamper in the shape of a chick or bunny, or have a normal hamper and decorate with bunny, chick and egg cutouts. Fill these hampers with tasty chocolate treats and sweets that everyone can enjoy. Get your kids to help you make them too!

Have a fun family holiday or day trip

A fantastic way to celebrate the Easter weekend is to go on a little family holiday or a day trip. Explore parts of the UK you haven’t yet uncovered with your family and find exciting activities to do nearby. The best places to visit are by the seaside so there’s plenty to do for the kids.

You could go to Wales, Great Yarmouth, Devon, Cornwall, or even Blackpool. Going to a seaside location gives your family plenty to do. You could go to a fairground or pleasure beach and enjoy the thrill of the rides. You could go to amusement parks and try to win toys and play games. You could even go to waterparks, museums, aquariums, piers and, of course, the beach!

Head to a National Park

During the Easter weekend, you could visit a national park with your family. There are so many different national parks to choose from and any one of them can make an incredibly fun day out. Plus, over Easter, many of the parks host various activities such as arts & crafts that kids can participate in.

Going to a national park allows children to exercise as they can walk and explore nature. During holidays like Easter, there can also be trails where children can find hidden items. This can make exercising more fun as kids are encouraged to walk and find all the items so they can win a prize. Many national parks have adventure playgrounds too so kids can run around and play with others. Not only does this help them get exercise, but it can improve their social skills and develop their imagination.

National parks are also a great way for children to learn something new. They are very educational with signs that detail things about the area, its past and why we have to protect them. These signs are often simplified for children to understand too so they can learn all about the importance of keeping natural areas safe. Plus, being outside helps kids to burn more calories, get fresh air, de-stress, build vitamin D and promote curiosity and creativity.

Do some Easter crafts

Easter activities can be as simple as doing some Easter crafts together. There are lots of different crafts that you and your kids can enjoy. Crafting together can be the perfect way to spend quality bonding time and is enjoyable for kids. Let children unleash their creativity and imaginations through crafts and display the finished products as Easter decorations.

You could get messy with paint by painting eggs together or make your own Easter baskets to go egg hunting with. You could also make hanging chick and bunny decorations, garlands or even hair accessories. Whatever you choose to make, spend time with your kids to enjoy family time away from screens. Go to a farm

Get up close and personal to adorable farmyard animals by visiting your local farm. Kids can look at all the cute animals and learn everything about them. Farms are also a great opportunity for kids to understand why we have farms and what they do on a day to day basis. This insight is further developed by allowing children to help out with small tasks that are done on a farm, such as grooming.

Kids can hold, stroke and cuddle fluffy and heart-melting animals, like rabbits, and interact with them. They also have the opportunity to feed various animals as another way to interact with them and learn about their different eating habits. Also, on many farms for the Easter holidays, children can participate in various fun workshops. These can include the animals as well as a theme. They can craft, socialise with other children and develop their passion for animals.

Do some gardening

The meaning of Easter symbolises rebirth, so, what’s a better way to celebrate the holiday than by doing some gardening together? Teach your kids about nature and the importance of doing gardening while planting Spring flowers or making your own fruit and veg patch.

You can plant some daffodils or tulips into your garden to attract the bees. When doing this, tell your kids all about bees and how they help our ecosystem. Show them the importance of brightly coloured, attractive flowers to encourage bees to get pollen. You could also discuss how bees are at risk of being extinct and how simple things like planting flowers helps them out to reproduce.

Hold a classic chocolate egg hunt

One of the best Easter activities to do as a family is a classic chocolate egg hunt. Set up a trail in your back garden and think about unique hiding places to put various sized eggs. You could hide them in small trees, bushes, under leaves of flowers, in plant pots and in any play equipment you may have.

Create little clues that can help kids find where you have hidden the eggs to make it a proper treasure hunt experience. Think about the age range of children who will be participating so you can make the clues easy to understand. Once you have set the hunt up, invite friends and their families to join in the fun and see who collects the most yummy chocolate eggs!

Use this guide on Easter activities to help you celebrate the Easter weekend in engaging and fun ways. Spend time with your family over the holiday and get that much needed quality bonding time together. Invite loved ones to join the fun too and try these activities out to keep kids entertained. We hope you enjoy the Easter break!
