What is Batwheels?

Batwheels is an American animated TV series based on superheroes and their crime-fighting vehicles from DC. The vehicles and the other characters, such as Batman, create an incredible team of crimefighters who serve to protect Gotham City!

The TV series is aimed at little superheroes in the making and was first aired on HBO Max in America on the 17th of September 2022. Since then, the show grew popular and was then aired on Cartoon Network on October 17th 2022 for the UK and the world to see.

How did Batwheels begin?

Warner Bros Animation came up with the idea of a new show based on the Batmobile for preschoolers to enjoy. In October 2020, they announced the show was coming to Cartoon Network’s preschool channel, Cartoonito and HBO Max.

Michael G Stern was the developer and co-executive producer for the show, alongside Simon J Smith as the supervising producer. Michael was part of the journey from the beginning as Warner Bros explored the idea of DC shows for preschoolers, making him one of the show’s main masterminds. He wrote the scripts and had the task of keeping the characters as close to the originals as possible.

However, to fit with the show’s demographic, Michael set a challenge to make them kid-friendly while still respecting the characters. So, with Batman, he stayed faithful to most interpretations of him but toned down his violence. For villains, he showed their classic portrayals while suiting them to preschoolers, such as Harley Quinn, who is depicted as a fun-loving prankster.

The show’s writers, with Michael, set about creating the Batwheels, making them lovable and fun so that little ones aren’t just watching it for Batman. They did this by giving the vehicles unique personalities and characteristics that little kids can relate to and love.

Simon was brought into the process later, after Michael wrote the first scripts to help bring the idea to life. When the show was renewed for a second series in 2022, they were both promoted to executive producers due to its success.

What is the plot of Batwheels?

The Batwheels are superpowered crime-fighting vehicles who defend Gotham City alongside Batman, Robin, Batgirl and loads more DC superheroes. They were only just created by the Bat Computer so they are little kids with no life experience. They have to work out life and protect the city while growing and discovering themselves!

They are led by Bam (the Batmobile), and the crew must understand and work out the growing pains of a newly formed super team. The Batwheels cars must do this whilst learning to understand the world around them and what it means to be kids, making the characters relatable to a younger audience. Along the way, they demonstrate the value of self-confidence, friendship and teamwork to little ones everywhere!
